Witold Libionka, MD, PhD

Neurosurgery

oard-certified neurosurgeon and neurotraumatologist, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Vital Medic Hospital in Kluczbork, President of the Polish Society for Neuromodulation (INS), and member of the Polish Society of Neurosurgeons.

He is an international consultant, educator, and lecturer in functional and oncological neurosurgery with a particular focus on functional brain mapping. He has extensive expertise in deep brain stimulation (DBS), spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, intrathecal baclofen therapy using implantable pumps, and the surgical resection of gliomas located in eloquent brain areas using awake craniotomy and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring of speech, motor, vision, hearing, and sensory functions. He has performed more than one thousand procedures of this type.

He has been involved in neurosurgery since 1998, when he began his scientific career. As a recipient of a scholarship from the Polish Ministry of Health, he completed an Individual Study Program at the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurotraumatology of the Jagiellonian University Medical College in Kraków. He continued his education through doctoral studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University Medical College (2002–2006). During his neurosurgical residency at the same department (2003–2010), he completed numerous advanced training programs in Poland, the United States, Germany, and France. He also completed a one-year clinical and research fellowship in functional and stereotactic neurosurgery at the University of Rochester, USA.

Alongside his clinical practice, he remains actively involved in scientific research. He performs dozens of neurosurgical procedures each month while participating in numerous research projects. He is the author or co-author of nearly one hundred scientific publications and conference presentations. His research on the mechanisms of deep brain stimulation has received awards at both national and international scientific conferences and has been published in Nature Medicine and Nature Neuroscience.

 

Areas of expertise

  • Neuro-oncology – surgical treatment of primary and metastatic tumors of the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, skull base, and spine using intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, awake craniotomy, intraoperative MRI, microsurgical techniques, and endoscopic surgery.
  • Functional neurosurgery – surgical treatment of extrapyramidal disorders, including Parkinson's disease, dystonia, essential tremor, and Huntington's disease.
  • Pain management – neurosurgical treatment of central and peripheral pain syndromes, migraine headaches using motor cortex stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, and peripheral nerve stimulation; treatment of trigeminal neuralgia and glossopharyngeal neuralgia with microvascular decompression.
  • Psychoneurosurgery and research into the cellular mechanisms of neuromodulation, including neurotransmitter systems and effector cell populations.
  • Vascular neurosurgery – surgical and combined treatment of vascular malformations of the central nervous system, including intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and cavernous malformations.
