What does a hypertension specialist treat?

A hypertension specialist diagnoses and treats high blood pressure, as well as its complications and secondary causes. The doctor analyzes imaging and laboratory test results, including kidney function, electrolyte levels, adrenal and thyroid hormones, and interprets blood pressure readings from 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM).

 

The specialist cares for patients with:

  • primary hypertension, the most common form of the condition
  • secondary hypertension, resulting for example from kidney disease, hormonal disorders, or sleep apnea
  • treatment-resistant hypertension, despite the use of 2–3 medications
  • significant blood pressure fluctuations, including hypotension and hypertensive crises
  • coexisting conditions such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, and hypercholesterolemia
  • high-normal blood pressure, also known as prehypertension, and cardiovascular risk

When should you see a hypertension specialist?

It is worth consulting a hypertension specialist if:

  • your blood pressure is elevated in home measurements, above 135/85 mmHg
  • you have difficulty controlling your blood pressure despite taking medication
  • you experience symptoms such as headaches, tinnitus, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness, or swelling
  • you have been diagnosed with left ventricular hypertrophy, proteinuria, changes in the fundus of the eye, or impaired kidney function
  • you have a family history or other risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes, smoking, stress, or sleep apnea
  • you want to establish a blood pressure monitoring plan or switch to better-tolerated medication

Interdisciplinary treatment of hypertension

At Garden Clinic, hypertension treatment can be carried out by a team. The hypertension specialist works with a cardiologist, nephrologist, diabetologist, dietitian, and physiotherapist.

 

The treatment plan may include:

  • individually selected pharmacotherapy, including diuretics, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, sartans, and other medications
  • diagnostics of secondary causes of hypertension
  • lifestyle modification, including a low-sodium diet, weight reduction, and regular physical activity
  • monitoring of kidney function, lipid levels, and blood glucose
  • improvement of sleep quality, including sleep apnea diagnostics
