Preparing for surgery and a safe return to mobility

Surgery does not begin in the operating room, nor does recovery end on the day of discharge. It is a process that includes preparing the body for surgery, the procedure itself, and a carefully planned return to everyday function.

At Garden Clinic, we support patients through every stage of this journey. In one place, you have access to specialist consultations, one-day surgery, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, clinical dietetics, medical training, hydrotherapy, a gym, and recovery facilities.

Preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation provides comprehensive support for patients preparing for surgery as well as those recovering after an operation.

The goals of therapy include reducing pain, improving joint mobility, rebuilding muscle strength, scar management, controlling swelling, and supporting a gradual return to everyday activities.

Benefits of rehabilitation

With an individualized rehabilitation program, patients can achieve:

  • Reduced pain, inflammation, and swelling
  • Improved joint mobility
  • Reduced muscle and fascial tension
  • Restoration of muscle strength and control
  • Faster recovery after surgery
  • Lower risk of surgical complications

Postoperative rehabilitation is an essential stage of treatment, helping patients regain mobility and function following orthopedic and other surgical procedures.

For which orthopedic procedures is physiotherapy recommended?

Preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation is commonly recommended before and after procedures such as:

  • Knee arthroscopy
  • Hip arthroscopy
  • Shoulder arthroscopy
  • Ligament repair and reconstruction, including ACL, PCL, and ATFL reconstruction
  • Tendon repair and reconstruction, including Achilles tendon surgery
  • Spine surgery, including microdiscectomy, spinal fusion, and artificial disc replacement
  • Surgical fixation of bone fractures
  • And many other orthopedic and surgical procedures

Who is this rehabilitation for?

At Garden Clinic, we provide rehabilitation before and after orthopedic, general surgical, reconstructive, and other procedures where recovery of movement and function is essential.

We most commonly work with patients before and after:

  • Knee, hip, shoulder, spine, ankle, and hand surgery
  • Ligament reconstruction, including ACL reconstruction
  • Arthroscopic procedures
  • Hip, knee, and shoulder joint replacement surgery
  • Fractures and traumatic injuries
  • Hernia surgery
  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • Procedures followed by scarring, swelling, limited mobility, or muscle weakness

You can benefit from physiotherapy whether your surgery has already been scheduled or you are still considering treatment. Early assessment allows us to prepare your body more effectively for surgery and recovery.

Why start rehabilitation before surgery?

Many patients believe rehabilitation should begin only after surgery. In reality, preparing the body beforehand can significantly improve recovery.

Before surgery, we focus on improving joint mobility, strengthening muscles, teaching safe movement patterns, and reducing pain that could interfere with postoperative rehabilitation.

Preoperative rehabilitation may help:

  • Reduce pain and tissue tension
  • Minimize swelling
  • Improve range of motion
  • Strengthen muscles before surgery
  • Teach proper walking mechanics
  • Prepare patients to use crutches safely
  • Practice everyday movements such as standing up, sitting down, and climbing stairs
  • Explain what to expect after surgery

Postoperative rehabilitation

Following surgery, rehabilitation is planned individually according to your surgeon's recommendations, the type of procedure performed, tissue healing, and your overall condition.

Treatment focuses on:

  • Pain and swelling management
  • Safe mobilization of the operated area
  • Restoring range of motion
  • Rebuilding muscle strength
  • Gait retraining
  • Postoperative scar therapy
  • Improving stability and coordination
  • Returning to daily activities
  • Preparing for work, sport, and higher levels of physical activity

Your first physiotherapy consultation

Rehabilitation begins with a comprehensive physiotherapy assessment. During your appointment, we review your medical history, discuss your symptoms and goals, and evaluate your physical function.

Please bring any available medical documentation, including imaging studies (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, or CT scans), hospital discharge summaries, operative reports, your surgeon's recommendations, and a list of current medications.

Your physiotherapist will assess pain levels, range of motion, muscle strength, swelling, walking pattern, posture, movement control, scar condition (if applicable), and any limitations affecting your daily activities.

Rehabilitation techniques

Every rehabilitation program is individually tailored according to the type of surgery, stage of healing, pain level, and personal goals.

Therapeutic exercise

Exercise is the foundation of rehabilitation. We use mobility, strengthening, stabilization, balance, breathing, and functional exercises specifically selected for each patient.

Manual therapy

Manual therapy helps reduce muscle and fascial tension, restore joint mobility, and address movement compensations that often develop before or after surgery.

Scar therapy

Once healing allows, we begin scar therapy to improve tissue mobility, elasticity, comfort, and sensitivity around the surgical scar.

Lymphatic drainage

Lymphatic drainage can help reduce postoperative swelling and the feeling of heaviness whenever clinically indicated.

Kinesiology taping

Kinesiology taping may be used to support swelling reduction, improve stability, and increase movement comfort.

Hydrotherapy

Patients can also benefit from rehabilitation in our therapeutic pool, where water-based exercises reduce joint loading and support a gradual return to movement.

Medical training

During the later stages of recovery, we introduce medical training to rebuild strength, coordination, stability, and readiness for greater physical demands. It serves as the bridge between physiotherapy and a full return to everyday life or sport.

One complete rehabilitation pathway

At Garden Clinic, preoperative rehabilitation prepares your body for surgery, while postoperative rehabilitation guides you safely through every stage of recovery.

Our individualized programs combine physiotherapy, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, hydrotherapy, scar management, medical training, specialist consultations, clinical dietetics, and comprehensive recovery support.
